The Cheltenham Gold Cup 2027 is already developing into one of the most eagerly anticipated races of the National Hunt season. Defending champion Gaelic Warrior is a clear ante-post favourite, but established Grade 1 performers such as Jango Baie, Fact To File and Inothewayurthinkin are joined by an exciting generation of emerging staying chasers.
The Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup will be staged on Friday 19 March 2027, the fourth and final day of the Cheltenham Festival. The meeting itself runs from Tuesday 16 March to Friday 19 March, with 28 races scheduled across four days. The official race time has not yet been confirmed.
At this early stage, there are no confirmed Cheltenham Gold Cup 2027 runners. The horses discussed below are prospective contenders listed in ante-post betting markets. Plans can change because of form, fitness, ground conditions and alternative Festival targets.

Leading Cheltenham Gold Cup 2027 Runners
Gaelic Warrior
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Current odds: 2/1–9/4
Gaelic Warrior deserves his position at the top of the Cheltenham Gold Cup betting. The Willie Mullins-trained chaser produced a dominant performance in the 2026 race, travelling powerfully before taking control approaching the second-last fence.
He jumped the final obstacle four lengths ahead and extended his advantage on the run-in, defeating Jango Baie by eight lengths. Racing Post awarded him a performance rating of 182, considerably higher than his official mark of 170 going into the contest.
That victory also gave jockey Paul Townend a record fifth Gold Cup success. His previous wins came aboard Al Boum Photo in 2019 and 2020 and Galopin Des Champs in 2023 and 2024. Townend’s fifth victory moved him ahead of the other jockeys in the race’s history.
Gaelic Warrior’s combination of cruising speed, proven stamina and Festival experience makes him the most likely winner at this stage. However, odds close to 2/1 are demanding for an ante-post selection more than seven months before the race.
Even an outstanding chaser must remain fit, retain his form and avoid unsuitable ground. The favourite’s price offers little protection against the normal uncertainties of a full National Hunt season.
Gold Cup assessment: The horse to beat, but his short price already reflects his obvious credentials.
Jango Baie
Trainer: Nicky Henderson
Current odds: 7/1–8/1
Jango Baie is the clear second favourite and arguably the most credible challenger to Gaelic Warrior.
Nicky Henderson’s runner finished eight lengths behind the winner in the 2026 Gold Cup. He made a mistake three fences from home but recovered to move into second at the next obstacle. Although he could not match Gaelic Warrior’s acceleration, he kept on well and finished two lengths ahead of former champion Inothewayurthinkin.
Jango Baie subsequently strengthened his form by winning the Grade 1 Racing Welfare Bowl at Aintree in April. He scored by 16 lengths from Protektorat after the strongly travelling Impaire Et Passe fell at the second-last fence. The incident makes the winning margin less reliable as a measure of superiority, but Jango Baie still completed the job professionally.
He will be eight years old in 2027, an ideal age for a staying chaser, and has already proved that he can handle the Gold Cup’s distance and atmosphere. The central question is whether he can find the improvement required to reverse an eight-length defeat.
At approximately 8/1, his price is considerably more attractive than Gaelic Warrior’s. A strong campaign through races such as the Betfair Chase, King George or Cotswold Chase could see those odds shorten.
Gold Cup assessment: The leading alternative to the favourite and one of the strongest early contenders.
Final Demand
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Current odds: 14/1–16/1
Final Demand represents the younger generation of potential Gold Cup horses. He finished second to stablemate Kitzbuhel in the 2026 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, one of the Festival’s most important trials for future staying chasers.
Kitzbuhel made the running and resisted Final Demand’s challenge in a demanding Grade 1 contest over three miles and one furlong. Final Demand was beaten by five and a half lengths but continued to finish his race strongly.
His overall profile is not flawless. He had previously finished third behind Kaid d’Authie and Western Fold in a Grade 1 novice chase at Leopardstown after starting as the odds-on favourite. That result demonstrated that he still had areas to improve, particularly when facing experienced and tactically versatile opposition.
Nevertheless, staying chasers can improve considerably between their novice and second seasons over fences. Final Demand possesses the physical scope and stamina to develop into a serious open-company performer.
Gold Cup assessment: High potential, but he must improve his jumping and consistency to justify his position among the leading contenders.
Fact To File
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Current odds: 16/1–20/1
Fact To File may be one of the most interesting horses in the market because his price reflects uncertainty over both distance and target rather than a lack of ability.
The JP McManus-owned chaser won the 2025 Ryanair Chase and added the Irish Gold Cup to his record in February 2026. He was then withdrawn shortly before the 2026 Ryanair because connections considered the ground unsuitable.
Before the 2026 Festival, Willie Mullins indicated that Fact To File and Gaelic Warrior were likely to be separated, with Gaelic Warrior directed towards the Gold Cup and Fact To File kept to the shorter Ryanair distance.
That decision explains the principal risk attached to backing Fact To File for 2027. He has sufficient Grade 1 class, but connections may again favour a race over approximately two miles and five furlongs.
A convincing performance over three miles during the winter would transform his Gold Cup credentials. Until then, odds of around 20/1 should be viewed as compensation for substantial target uncertainty.
Gold Cup assessment: Undoubted class, although stamina, ground and intended Festival target remain unresolved.
Kitzbuhel
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Current odds: 16/1–25/1
Kitzbuhel earned his position in the Gold Cup market by winning the 2026 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase.
He produced an accomplished front-running performance, making all the running and continuing strongly when challenged by Final Demand. His jumping enabled him to control the contest, while his finishing effort showed that three miles and one furlong was within his stamina range.
The transition from novice chases to an open Gold Cup is significant. Kitzbuhel will need to face older, stronger and more tactically experienced horses while racing over an additional furlong and a half.
His early price also varies considerably between bookmakers. That disparity indicates that the market has not yet reached a firm conclusion about his true ability.
Gold Cup assessment: A natural contender on his Brown Advisory form, but open Grade 1 competition will provide a much harder test.
Inothewayurthinkin
Trainer: Gavin Cromwell
Current odds: 20/1–33/1
Inothewayurthinkin should not be forgotten simply because he lost his Gold Cup title in 2026.
The 2025 winner finished third behind Gaelic Warrior and Jango Baie when attempting to defend his crown. His jumping was not consistently fluent, and he made a mistake at the tenth fence, but he stayed on strongly from the rear to claim third place.
He will be nine in 2027, which should not be considered a major negative for a staying chaser. More importantly, he has already proved that he can win a Gold Cup and produce his best form on Cheltenham’s New Course.
At 25/1 or bigger, his price may underestimate the importance of proven course-and-distance form. A return to his best jumping would give him realistic place prospects, particularly if conditions become testing.
Gold Cup assessment: One of the more attractive experienced contenders at bigger odds.
The Jukebox Man
Trainer: Ben Pauling
Current odds: 20/1–25/1
The Jukebox Man entered the 2026 Gold Cup as a leading contender after winning the King George VI Chase at Kempton.
He defeated Banbridge in a memorable finish at Kempton, with Gaelic Warrior taking third. The race was completed in a new course-record time, demonstrating The Jukebox Man’s considerable speed over three miles.
However, Cheltenham produced a different result. He disputed the lead during the Gold Cup but weakened quickly after the third-last fence, eventually finishing eighth. His trainer subsequently reported that the horse had made a respiratory noise.
That explanation means his Cheltenham defeat may be forgivable. Even so, his best form has come on Kempton’s flatter, sharper course, whereas the Gold Cup demands sustained stamina up Cheltenham’s uphill finish.
Gold Cup assessment: Capable of elite three-mile form, but he must prove that the Gold Cup’s longer and more demanding test suits him.
Lulamba
Trainer: Nicky Henderson
Current odds: 16/1–25/1
Lulamba is a surprising inclusion near the front of some Gold Cup markets because much of his best form has come over shorter distances.
He won the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury before finishing third in the 2026 Arkle at Cheltenham. Kargese won that two-mile novice chase, with Kopek Des Bordes second and Lulamba third.
There is a considerable difference between competing over two miles and winning a Gold Cup over more than three miles and two furlongs. Lulamba may eventually improve over longer trips, but the market is currently pricing potential rather than established staying form.
He could easily be aimed at the Champion Chase or Ryanair instead. Punters should therefore wait for clearer evidence about his distance requirements before treating him as a genuine Gold Cup runner.
Gold Cup assessment: Talented, but the stamina and target questions are too significant at current odds.
Kaid d’Authie
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Current odds: 20/1–33/1
Kaid d’Authie is another progressive horse who could enter the Gold Cup conversation during the 2026–27 season.
He won a Grade 1 novice chase over approximately two miles and five and a half furlongs at Leopardstown in February 2026, beating Western Fold by more than four lengths. Final Demand finished a further eight lengths behind in third.
That was a strong piece of form, but Kaid d’Authie has not yet proved that he can reproduce the same level over the Gold Cup distance. His speed and jumping give him options, including the Ryanair Chase.
Gold Cup assessment: An exciting Grade 1 winner whose place in the market depends on how effectively he progresses beyond three miles.
Grey Dawning
Trainer: Dan Skelton
Current odds: 33/1–50/1
Grey Dawning finished fourth in the 2026 Gold Cup after racing prominently.
He remained in contention approaching the second-last fence but weakened after the final obstacle, finishing six and a half lengths behind Inothewayurthinkin and more than 16 lengths behind Gaelic Warrior. Mistakes at the 15th and 16th fences did not help his cause.
Although he needs to improve, Grey Dawning has proven that he can compete respectably in the race. Odds of 40/1 or bigger may appeal to bettors searching for a runner with genuine Gold Cup experience rather than an untested novice.
Gold Cup assessment: A credible outsider, especially if his jumping becomes more efficient.
Other Possible Cheltenham Gold Cup Runners
Soldier In Milan
Soldier In Milan was an impressive winner of the 2026 Irish Grand National, progressing rapidly over fences before winning the Fairyhouse handicap from an official mark of 142. However, connections may consider the Aintree Grand National a more suitable long-term objective than the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The Big Westerner
The Big Westerner was withdrawn from the 2026 Brown Advisory because of unsuitable ground. Her stamina potential makes her an interesting name, but she needs to establish herself at Grade 1 level before being viewed as a leading Gold Cup candidate.
Spillane’s Tower
Spillane’s Tower was declared a non-runner in the 2026 Gold Cup because of unsuitable ground. His participation in 2027 could again depend on conditions, making him a risky ante-post proposition without non-runner protection.
What Does It Take to Win the Cheltenham Gold Cup?
The Gold Cup tests more than raw speed. Successful runners usually require:
- Proven stamina over at least three miles.
- Efficient jumping under pressure.
- The tactical speed to maintain position when the race accelerates.
- The ability to handle Cheltenham’s undulations and uphill finish.
- Grade 1 form against experienced staying chasers.
- Fitness and durability through a demanding winter campaign.
The 2026 race demonstrated the importance of travelling efficiently. Gaelic Warrior conserved energy before moving into the lead approaching the second-last fence, while several prominent runners weakened after racing aggressively.
Cheltenham experience is also valuable. Horses encounter a unique combination of changing gradients, packed grandstands and sustained pressure. Previous Festival form does not guarantee success, but it reduces the number of unanswered questions.
Cheltenham Gold Cup 2027 Early Betting Verdict
Most likely winner: Gaelic Warrior
Gaelic Warrior is the correct favourite. His eight-length victory in 2026 was decisive, and he possesses the speed, stamina and Cheltenham form required to win again. The concern is not his ability but whether odds close to 2/1 represent value this far in advance.
Main challenger: Jango Baie
Jango Baie is the strongest alternative. He was second in the Gold Cup before winning at Grade 1 level at Aintree. At approximately 8/1, he offers a more attractive balance between proven ability and potential return.
Potential value: Inothewayurthinkin
The 2025 champion stayed on to finish third in 2026 despite making jumping errors. Prices of 25/1 or bigger look generous for a previous winner who remains young enough to return to his best.
Dark horse: Fact To File
Fact To File has the class to become a major contender, but bettors need evidence that the Gold Cup—and not another attempt at the Ryanair—is his intended target.
Our early shortlist is therefore:
- Jango Baie – best combination of price and proven Gold Cup form
- Gaelic Warrior – most likely winner but already short
- Inothewayurthinkin – experienced each-way candidate at bigger odds
This is an early assessment rather than a final betting recommendation. Form during the Betfair Chase, King George, Savills Chase, Irish Gold Cup and Cheltenham Trials Day will provide far stronger evidence.
Ante-Post Betting Advice
Ante-post betting can produce larger odds than those available during Festival week, but the increased price comes with additional risk.
Under standard ante-post rules, the stake is normally lost when a selected horse does not participate. A refund is only available when the bet was specifically placed under non-runner-no-bet or non-runner-money-back terms.
Before placing a Gold Cup bet:
- Confirm whether the market is standard ante-post or non-runner no bet.
- Check that the trainer has identified the Gold Cup as the likely target.
- Compare odds across multiple licensed bookmakers.
- Consider ground preferences and possible alternative races.
- Use small stakes because the race remains several months away.
- Never chase losses or bet money required for essential expenses.
The UK Gambling Commission notes that gambling-management tools such as deposit limits, time-outs and reality checks are available to help customers remain in control.
Cheltenham Gold Cup History
The Cheltenham Gold Cup dates back to 1924 and has been won by many of the greatest steeplechasers in racing history.
Golden Miller holds the record with five consecutive victories between 1932 and 1936. Only nine horses have won the race more than once, with Galopin Des Champs becoming the latest multiple winner in 2023 and 2024.
Gaelic Warrior will attempt to join that exclusive group in 2027. Victory would also give Willie Mullins another major opportunity to strengthen his position among the race’s most successful trainers.

Gaelic Warrior won the 2026 Gold Cup by eight lengths from Jango Baie. Inothewayurthinkin finished third and Grey Dawning took fourth place.

Yes. He is the leading contender after his dominant 2026 success. However, only nine horses in the history of the race have won it more than once, illustrating the difficulty of successfully defending the title.

Final Prediction
The Cheltenham Gold Cup 2027 market revolves around Gaelic Warrior, and rightly so. His 2026 victory was the performance of an elite staying chaser, and a repeat would place him among the race’s multiple winners.
Nevertheless, his short odds leave little room for setbacks. Jango Baie offers the strongest combination of proven Gold Cup form, age and price, while Inothewayurthinkin is an appealing experienced contender at longer odds.
The emerging stayers Final Demand, Kitzbuhel and Kaid d’Authie must demonstrate that they can bridge the gap from novice company to the highest level. Fact To File has enough talent to threaten the favourite, but his intended distance and Festival target require clarification.
Early prediction: Jango Baie to challenge Gaelic Warrior most seriously, with Inothewayurthinkin rated as the leading bigger-priced contender.
