Ragnarok Gold is Slotmill’s follow-up to its March 2024 Norse cluster-pays title Ragnarok. The Stockholm studio hasn’t rebuilt the game — it has re-tuned it. The 5×5 grid, the cluster mechanic, the avalanche, the doubling multiplier and Loki’s meddling all return. What’s new is the top end: a 40,000x cap where the original stopped at 10,000x, two fresh multiplier-manipulation features, and a Super Mode that changes what a free spins round can become.
If you played the original and found it competent but slightly derivative — it borrowed heavily from Yggdrasil’s DoubleMax template, and Bang Bang Games’ The Runemakers DoubleMax beat it to the same idea — Gold is Slotmill’s answer. It’s the same skeleton with considerably more muscle.

What is Ragnarok Gold?

How Ragnarok Gold works
Clusters, not paylines
Wins form when five or more identical symbols connect horizontally or vertically. There are no paylines and no ways — just adjacency. Symbol values scale with cluster size, and the paytable steps up at 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12+ symbols. Clusters of 12 or more pay the premium rates.
For context, the original Ragnarok paid its top symbol between 0.40x and 12.50x depending on cluster size, with lower-tier symbols topping out around 5–6x. Expect Gold to sit in a similar range; we’ll confirm the exact paytable at launch.
The practical takeaway: raw cluster pays in this game are small. A monster 12-symbol cluster of the best symbol is worth roughly 12x your stake. That is nothing. The entire game is built so that number gets multiplied.
Avalanche and the Wild Generator
Every winning cluster clears, and new symbols drop into the gaps. Chains continue as long as wins keep forming.
The clever bit — and it’s lifted straight from the DoubleMax playbook — is the Wild Generator. After each winning cluster, a wild is planted into one of the vacated cells before the new symbols fall. That wild substitutes for everything except bonus symbols. So each avalanche doesn’t just refresh the grid, it seeds it with a helper. Long chains become self-reinforcing: wins create wilds, wilds create wins.
The Progressive Win Multiplier is the whole game
Here’s the engine. The multiplier starts at x1 and doubles with every successful avalanche:

This is exponential, and exponential is where the 40,000x lives. A 12-symbol premium cluster paying ~12x at x2,048 is worth over 24,000x on its own. But look at the top of that table and be honest with yourself about how often you’ll see twelve consecutive winning avalanches on a 5×5 grid.
In the base game, the multiplier resets to x1 at the start of every spin. That’s the catch, and it’s the same catch the original had. Base-game Ragnarok Gold is a holding pattern.
Ragnarök Surge, Golden Relic and Loki’s Trick
Three features tamper with the multiplier ladder:
- Ragnarök Surge — skips the next multiplier step entirely, jumping the value immediately. In a doubling sequence, skipping a rung isn’t a small favour; it’s a free 2x on everything that follows.
- Golden Relic — drops one to three wilds onto the grid and pushes the multiplier up a step. The most useful of the three, because it improves both sides of the equation at once.
- Loki’s Trick — triggers before a round begins and raises the multiplier by several random steps before a single symbol has landed. Start a chain at x8 instead of x1 and the whole round is worth eight times more.
These are the genuine additions over the original, which only had Loki’s Trick. Surge and Relic exist to solve the base game’s core problem: chains that die at three or four avalanches, right before the multiplier gets interesting.
Giant Symbols
At the start of a round, or after a win chain finishes, 2×2 or 3×3 giant symbols can land. A 2×2 counts as four matching symbols; a 3×3 counts as nine. Since a cluster only needs five, a 3×3 giant symbol is most of a winning cluster arriving pre-assembled — and, more importantly, it’s a chain-starter that keeps the multiplier climbing.
Free Spins and Super Mode
Three, four or five bonus symbols award 8, 10 or 12 free spins respectively.
Now the part that matters: during free spins, the multiplier does not reset between spins. It persists across the entire bonus and only resets after the final free spin. This transforms the maths. In the base game you’re trying to build a tower in a single spin. In free spins you’re building it across eight to twelve.
Super Mode can activate at the start of a free spins round. When it does, the Giant Symbol feature is guaranteed on every single free spin. Combine a guaranteed chain-starter with a multiplier that never resets and you have the configuration that pays 40,000x. Everything else in this game is a queue for this room.
Xtra-Bet: worth it?
Xtra-Bet raises your stake by 50% and increases free spins frequency to 3.4x the normal rate. Wins are still calculated on your original base bet.
Read that last sentence again, because it’s where players get confused. The extra 50% buys you frequency, not win size. You are paying more per spin for the same payouts, just more often.
Is it +EV? Almost certainly not. In the original Ragnarok, activating Xtra-Bet nudged the RTP from 96.12% down to 96.10%. There’s a genuinely revealing detail buried in this table. The 3-Bonus buy costs 100x for 8 spins — 12.5x per free spin. The 5-Bonus buy costs 400x for 12 spins — 33.3x per free spin. You’re paying a 2.67x premium per spin for the larger buy.
Why would a studio price it that way? Because with a persistent doubling multiplier, free spins aren’t linearly valuable. Spins nine through twelve are worth vastly more than spins one through four, because they land when the multiplier has had time to compound. Slotmill’s own pricing is telling you where the money is in this game. That’s not marketing — that’s their maths model, exposed.
The Super Mode buy at 1,000x is ten times the entry-level buy. It’s also the only option that guarantees the configuration the game is actually built around.
A warning that we’d rather over-state than under-state: feature buys have their own RTP and there is no guarantee whatsoever that a bonus round returns more than it cost. A 1,000x buy can and does return zero. Buys are the fastest way to lose a bankroll in slots, and pricing that looks “smart” is still a price you’re paying.
RTP, volatility and the 40,000x question
This is the section most reviews get wrong, so we’ll be blunt.
Ragnarok Gold has a 96.10% RTP and a 40,000x cap. The original had 96.12% and 10,000x.
The ceiling went up 4x. The RTP did not move. A higher max win at the same RTP is not an upgrade — it’s a redistribution. RTP is a fixed budget. If you extend the tail of the payout distribution dramatically while keeping the total return constant, the money funding that longer tail has to be taken from somewhere else in the distribution — from mid-range wins, or from hit frequency, or both.
In plain terms: Ragnarok Gold will very likely feel drier than the original, with longer dead stretches and fewer satisfying mid-size hits, in exchange for a jackpot outcome most players will never see. That’s the trade. It isn’t a criticism — plenty of players actively want this — but “40,000x!” on a promo banner is not the same thing as a better game, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
For reference, the original Ragnarok triggered free spins roughly once every 308 spins, dropping to about 1 in 101 with Xtra-Bet. If Gold is comparable, budget accordingly: at 200+ spins between bonuses, a £0.20 session needs real patience and a real limit.
