The 2026/27 EFL League Two betting odds point towards one of the most competitive promotion races in recent years. Salford City start as clear favourites in the outright market, but there is significant depth immediately behind them, with Bristol Rovers, Barnet, Port Vale, York City, Chesterfield, Grimsby Town and Rotherham United all attracting interest.
For bettors, that competitiveness creates opportunity—but it also makes price comparison essential. League Two is a 46-match campaign where squad depth, coaching stability, injuries, January recruitment and the ability to grind out results through winter can matter just as much as pre-season reputation.
As of 12 August 2026, Oddschecker had Salford City at around 4/1 for the League Two title, followed by Bristol Rovers at 9/1, Barnet at 10/1 and Port Vale at 13/1. Individual bookmakers differed: bet365 listed Salford at 4/1, Bristol Rovers at 8/1, Barnet at 9/1 and Port Vale at 12/1. That variation alone shows why bettors should compare prices rather than automatically accepting the first odds they see.
League Two Betting Odds 2026/27
Here is an indicative snapshot of the leading League Two title contenders:
| Team | Approx. Title Odds |
| Salford City | 4/1 |
| Bristol Rovers | 8/1–9/1 |
| Barnet | 9/1–10/1 |
| Port Vale | 12/1–13/1 |
| York City | 14/1 |
| Chesterfield | 14/1 |
| Grimsby Town | 14/1 |
| Rotherham United | 16/1 |
| Oldham Athletic | 18/1 |
| Gillingham | 20/1 |
The precise prices vary by sportsbook. Bet365’s current market, for example, prices Salford at 4/1, Bristol Rovers at 8/1, Barnet at 9/1, Port Vale at 12/1 and York, Chesterfield and Grimsby at 14/1.
The season’s opening weekend takes place across 14–16 August 2026, while the League Two regular season is scheduled to conclude on 8 May 2027.
That gives bettors a long season in which prices will move dramatically. Pre-season outright betting can produce attractive prices, but there is rarely a need to force a bet simply because the campaign is about to begin.
Best League Two Bets 2026/27
Our early betting shortlist is:
- League Two winner: Port Vale at around 12/1 or better
- Promotion: Grimsby Town at around 5/2
- Top-three alternative: Chesterfield
- Value title contender: Grimsby Town at around 14/1
- Top goalscorer: Macaulay Langstaff
- Relegation candidate: Newport County
These are price-based selections rather than predictions that any outcome is guaranteed. The difference matters: a team can be highly likely to perform well but still be a poor bet if its odds are too short.
Salford City – Worth Backing at 4/1?
Salford City are the obvious place to begin because the market has installed the Ammies as clear favourites.
They came agonisingly close to automatic promotion in 2025/26, finishing fourth with 81 points, before losing 3-0 to Notts County in the play-off final. Their 25 league victories actually exceeded the win totals of champions Bromley and runners-up MK Dons, illustrating just how close Salford were to going up automatically.
There has since been a managerial change. Peter Cklamovski has replaced Karl Robinson, while Salford have strengthened an already talented squad. Macaulay Langstaff provides a proven scoring threat and Luke Molyneux adds further quality to the attacking unit. The club’s ability to strengthen again later in the transfer window or in January is another reason bookmakers have taken few chances with their price.
The question is not whether Salford can win League Two. They clearly can.
The question is whether 4/1 represents value.
At that price, the implied probability is roughly 20% before bookmaker margin. That is quite a strong assessment in a division containing several clubs capable of reaching 80-plus points.
There are also tactical uncertainties under a new coach. EFL analyst Gab Sutton has highlighted concerns about Salford potentially becoming too open defensively under Cklamovski’s possession-heavy approach.
Verdict: Strong favourites, but short enough to oppose
Salford are our most likely individual winner, but 4/1 is not our preferred outright bet. There is better risk-to-reward potential further down the market.
Port Vale – Best League Two Winner Bet
Pick: Port Vale to win League Two at 12/1 or better
Port Vale are our preferred title bet at the available prices.
The Valiants arrive after relegation from League One, but their previous season was not entirely disastrous. They produced several encouraging results after Jon Brady took charge, including wins against Bolton and Stockport, while their FA Cup campaign reached the quarter-finals.
More importantly for bettors, Port Vale appear to have recruited with an immediate return to League One in mind.
Max Watters and Kyle Dempsey have been added to improve their attacking and midfield options, while Onel Hernandez and Mo Faal returned after spending time with the club previously. Goalkeeper Jackson Smith was another summer addition highlighted positively in pre-season analysis.
A relegated team is never automatically a promotion candidate. Some arrive in League Two carrying financial problems, losing their best players and struggling psychologically after a poor season.
Port Vale look more interesting because the market is not pricing them anywhere near Salford despite their League One experience and upgraded squad.
Bet365’s James Milton also selected Port Vale as his outright prediction before the season, further illustrating that the 12/1 region is not simply based on our reading of the market.
Why Port Vale appeal
They offer a useful combination of:
League One experience: Playing a division higher should leave several members of the squad well equipped for League Two.
Improved recruitment: The summer additions address identifiable areas of weakness.
Managerial continuity: Brady has already had time working with the squad rather than arriving days before the new campaign.
Price: Around 12/1 provides considerably more upside than Salford at 4/1.
Port Vale do not need to be three times less likely than Salford to win the league for the longer price to become interesting.
Verdict: Best outright bet
At 12/1 or bigger, Port Vale are our preferred League Two title selection.
Grimsby Town – Best Value Promotion Pick
Grimsby could be one of the most interesting teams in the entire division.
They finished seventh last season with 78 points, only three behind Salford and four behind third-placed Cambridge.
EFL analyst Gab Sutton has gone significantly further than the bookmakers, predicting Grimsby to finish first in his pre-season 1–24 assessment. His argument centres on continued development under David Artell, improved infrastructure, squad leadership and the possibility of further improvement from a team that has been progressing steadily.
That is particularly interesting because bookmakers remain far more cautious.
Bet365 lists Grimsby at around 14/1 for the title, 5/2 for promotion, 4/1 for a top-three finish and 5/4 for a top-seven finish.
Rather than requiring Grimsby to outperform the entire division, the promotion market provides several routes to success.
Best bet: Grimsby to be promoted
At around 5/2, Grimsby promotion is one of our favourite season-long positions.
Their 2025/26 performance provides a solid base, and improvement rather than transformation may be enough to put them firmly into the automatic-promotion conversation.
For bettors prepared to accept greater variance, the 14/1 title price is also attractive.
Bristol Rovers – Genuine Promotion Threat
Bristol Rovers are among the most intriguing sides because their final league position does not tell the full story.
They finished only 14th in 2025/26 with 62 points, but their season was extremely volatile. After Steve Evans took charge, Rovers eventually finished with a powerful run, winning 11 of 14 during their late-season surge.
Continuity could now be crucial.
A large part of the squad responsible for that improved form remains, while Rovers have strengthened several positions. That explains why bookmakers are prepared to overlook last season’s final league position and make them second favourites at around 8/1–9/1.
There is, however, an important betting distinction between believing Bristol Rovers will improve and believing they should be as short as 8/1.
A strong final three months can sometimes be over-weighted by the market. Opponents adapt, injuries change teams and a 46-game season places different demands on a squad than an excellent 14-game spell.
Verdict
Bristol Rovers are credible promotion candidates, but 8/1 for the title looks slightly short compared with Port Vale, Chesterfield or Grimsby at bigger prices.
Barnet – Can the Bees Maintain Their Momentum?
Barnet were one of League Two’s strongest finishers last season.
After an uneven start, they developed into a much more difficult side to beat and ended the season with 22 points from their final possible 24. They ultimately finished eighth with 76 points.
Their away performance was particularly impressive: Barnet collected 40 away points, with only MK Dons recording more.
That helps explain outright prices of approximately 9/1–10/1.
There are still questions.
Ryan Glover has departed, and parts of the midfield have been rebuilt. Sutton’s pre-season assessment suggests Barnet retain a coherent tactical identity but may still require additional creativity if they are to turn a play-off challenge into an automatic-promotion campaign.
Verdict
Barnet deserve respect, especially in top-seven or promotion markets, but their current outright price leaves less margin for error than some alternatives.
Chesterfield – A Strong Top-Three Candidate
If you prefer finishing-position markets rather than picking the champion, Chesterfield are worth serious consideration.
The Spireites finished only three points outside the automatic-promotion positions last season and have the advantage of managerial stability under Paul Cook. Their squad has also been reinforced defensively, including the additions of Jack Simpson and Alfie Pond.
Milton selected Chesterfield to finish in the top three as his alternative League Two bet, citing continuity as a major advantage in a division characterised by significant player and managerial turnover.
Current outright odds around 14/1 also place them firmly in the second group of contenders.
Verdict
Chesterfield top three is more appealing than backing them outright. Their floor looks relatively high, while the market does not require them to outperform every rival.
York City – The Dangerous Newcomers
National League champions York City should not be dismissed simply because they are newly promoted.
York edged Rochdale to the National League title after an exceptional campaign and return to the EFL with significant momentum. Bet365’s pre-season assessment notes that promoted National League sides have generally adapted well to League Two, while bookmakers place York around 14/1 for the title and 5/2 for promotion.
At the same time, promotion from non-league football introduces uncertainty. League Two’s relentless schedule, stronger squad depth and tactical variation can expose weaknesses that were less important at National League level.
Verdict
York are a fascinating dark-horse promotion candidate, but the 14/1 title price already gives them considerable respect.
League Two Promotion Odds 2026/27
The promotion market may be preferable to the outright market for bettors who identify a strong team but do not want the season to depend on finishing first.
Representative bet365 promotion odds on 12 August included:
| Team | Promotion Odds |
| Salford City | 10/11 |
| Bristol Rovers | 15/8 |
| Barnet | 2/1 |
| Port Vale | 9/4 |
| Chesterfield | 5/2 |
| York City | 5/2 |
| Grimsby Town | 5/2 |
| Rotherham United | 3/1 |
| Oldham Athletic | 4/1 |
| Gillingham | 5/1 |
Prices vary significantly across bookmakers: Oddschecker was showing Salford at 5/4 and both Barnet and Bristol Rovers around 2/1 at the time of our check.
That difference reinforces one of the most important principles in football betting: shop for the best odds.
Over dozens of bets, consistently taking 5/4 rather than 10/11 on the same outcome can have a substantial effect on long-term returns.
Best promotion bet: Grimsby at around 5/2
Grimsby’s 78-point total last season, existing continuity and positive pre-season analysis make them our preferred combination of price and potential.
League Two Top Goalscorer Odds 2026/27
Macaulay Langstaff begins the season as the clear favourite in the League Two top goalscorer market.
Oddschecker listed the leading contenders at approximately:
| Player | Top Goalscorer Odds |
| Macaulay Langstaff | 3/1 |
| Aaron Drinan | 12/1 |
| Jaze Kabia | 12/1 |
| Kabongo Tshimanga | 12/1 |
Langstaff’s price is short, but there is obvious reasoning behind it.
He previously scored 28 League Two goals for Notts County in 2023/24 and now joins a Salford side expected to create plenty of opportunities.
Swindon’s Aaron Drinan, meanwhile, enters the season as the defending Golden Boot winner after scoring 22 goals in 40 league appearances in 2025/26. Grimsby’s Jaze Kabia scored 18 league goals last season.
Top goalscorer pick: Macaulay Langstaff
At only around 3/1, Langstaff will not suit bettors searching for long-shot value.
However, his proven League Two scoring record combined with Salford’s expected attacking strength makes him the most convincing favourite in the market.
For a longer-priced alternative, Jaze Kabia around 12/1 becomes interesting if he remains at Grimsby and continues to play a major attacking role.
League Two Relegation Odds 2026/27
At the opposite end of the table, bookmakers expect Newport County to face another difficult season.
Bet365’s relegation market had:
| Team | Relegation Odds |
| Newport County | 2/1 |
| Cheltenham Town | 10/3 |
| Accrington Stanley | 7/2 |
| Crawley Town | 9/2 |
| Exeter City | 11/2 |
| Fleetwood Town | 11/2 |
| Shrewsbury Town | 11/2 |
| Tranmere Rovers | 11/2 |
Newport finished 20th last season with 43 points, only narrowly securing survival after a late improvement. Crawley finished 22nd with 40 points, while Cheltenham and Accrington also spent the campaign in the lower reaches.
Bet365’s latest relegation analysis consequently makes Newport favourites for the drop, followed by Cheltenham, Accrington and Crawley.
Relegation pick: Newport County
At 2/1 there is limited margin for error, so this is not a market where we would recommend aggressive staking.
However, based on last season’s performance and the current market assessment, Newport remain the most logical relegation selection.
Opening Weekend League Two Fixtures
The opening round provides an immediate chance to assess whether pre-season expectations match reality.
Fixtures scheduled for Saturday, 15 August include Newport vs Rochdale, Oldham vs Port Vale, Barnet vs Salford, Cheltenham vs Rotherham, Chesterfield vs Fleetwood, Grimsby vs Exeter, Northampton vs Swindon and York vs Bristol Rovers.
That opening programme is particularly useful because several major contenders meet teams with very different profiles.
Barnet vs Salford is arguably the standout match. Rather than reading too much into a single result, bettors should watch how Salford’s new tactical approach functions against a well-organised opponent.
York vs Bristol Rovers is another valuable early measuring stick, while Oldham vs Port Vale will immediately test our preferred outright selection.
How to Find Value in League Two Betting
League Two can reward bettors who research beyond league position.
- Compare underlying performance
Expected goals, shot quality, defensive numbers and chance creation can reveal teams whose results were either better or worse than their performances deserved.
For example, pre-season analysis noted that Crawley scored only 44 goals last season despite an expected-goals figure around 58, while Crewe conceded 58 despite an expected-goals-against figure of 66.6.
Numbers like these do not automatically predict what happens next, but they can highlight where regression or improvement may be possible.
- Follow managerial changes
League Two clubs frequently change managers, and tactical changes can dramatically alter results.
Salford are a prime example this season. They possess one of the strongest squads in the division but are simultaneously adapting to Cklamovski’s new approach.
- Pay attention to squad depth
A 46-game league campaign creates a different challenge from cup football.
Injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion eventually expose shallow squads.
This is especially important from December through February, when pitches, weather and accumulated fatigue can make technical superiority less decisive.
- Avoid blindly backing relegated clubs
League One clubs dropping into League Two often attract attention because of their name and previous status.
But relegation can trigger player departures, financial pressure and major rebuilding.
Evaluate the current squad rather than simply assuming a League One team must be better than established League Two opposition.
- Shop around for odds
The differences visible between Oddschecker and individual bookmaker markets show why this matters. A price of 5/4 instead of 10/11, or 13/1 instead of 12/1, may look minor on a single wager but becomes significant over time.
League Two 2026/27 Predicted Promotion Contenders
Our current ranking of the strongest promotion candidates is:
- Port Vale
- Grimsby Town
- Salford City
- Chesterfield
- Bristol Rovers
- Barnet
- York City
- Oldham Athletic
This differs from bookmaker prices because a betting prediction should incorporate value, not merely copy the market.
Salford may have the highest probability of promotion as an individual club, but their short odds reduce the betting appeal. Port Vale and Grimsby offer more attractive prices relative to what we believe their realistic chances could be.
Final Verdict
The 2026/27 League Two title race has all the ingredients of a highly competitive season.
Salford City are deserved favourites following their 81-point campaign and major summer additions, but 4/1 is short enough that we prefer looking elsewhere for outright value.
Port Vale at approximately 12/1 or better are our best League Two winner bet. Their League One experience, recruitment and improvement under Jon Brady give them a credible route towards challenging for automatic promotion and potentially the title.
Grimsby to be promoted at around 5/2 is our preferred promotion bet. They already collected 78 points last season and have been tipped by respected EFL analyst Gab Sutton to go considerably better in 2026/27.
Chesterfield offer another interesting route through top-three markets, while York are the newcomer most capable of disrupting the established contenders.
At the bottom, Newport County remain the bookmakers’ leading relegation candidate, while Macaulay Langstaff starts as the clear man to beat in the top goalscorer race.
