The 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup promises to be one of the most significant betting events on the international sporting calendar. Featuring 14 teams, 57 matches and a completely redesigned tournament structure, the competition will give cricket bettors more opportunities than ever to analyse teams, compare odds and explore match and outright markets.
South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will jointly host the tournament during October and November 2027. It will be the first Men’s Cricket World Cup staged in Africa since 2003, while Namibia will host senior World Cup matches for the first time. Twelve venues have been selected across the three countries.
However, successfully betting on a Cricket World Cup requires more than selecting a famous team or backing the shortest-priced favourite. The new format, Southern African conditions, qualification uncertainty, squad changes and the length of the competition will all influence the betting landscape.

How the New 2027 Cricket World Cup Format Works
Understanding the tournament structure is essential for anyone considering an outright, qualification or group-stage bet.
The ICC approved a new three-stage format in July 2026. It replaces the previous plan for two groups of seven followed by semi-finals and expands the number of matches from the originally proposed 54 to 57.
Super Series
The three lowest-ranked qualified teams—those seeded 12th, 13th and 14th—will contest an opening round-robin Super Series.
Each team will play the other two once. The team finishing first will progress, while the other two will be eliminated.
This stage introduces an important betting consideration. Lower-ranked qualifiers cannot simply reach the main group phase by qualifying for the tournament; they must survive a high-pressure preliminary round first.
Possible markets may include:
- Super Series winner
- Team to qualify for the main round
- Individual match winner
- Top Super Series run-scorer
- Top Super Series wicket-taker
Because only one team advances, net run rate and winning margins could become important if the teams finish level on points.
Main Group Round
The Super Series winner will join 11 higher-seeded teams in the next stage. The 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six.
Every team will play five group matches, producing 30 fixtures in total. The top three teams in each group will qualify automatically for the Super 7. One additional team—the best fourth-placed side across the two groups—will also advance.
This “best fourth-placed team” rule adds another analytical layer. Bettors may need to compare points, net run rate and other official tie-breaking criteria across both groups rather than assessing each table independently.
Super 7
The seven remaining teams will play one another in a round-robin Super 7 stage, creating another 21 matches.
The top four sides will qualify for the semi-finals:
- First place will play fourth place.
- Second place will play third place.
This format rewards consistency. A team may need to navigate five main-group matches and six Super 7 fixtures before reaching the knockout phase. Depth, fitness, adaptability and squad rotation are therefore likely to matter more than one or two outstanding performances.
Semi-Finals and Final
The two semi-final winners will contest the World Cup final.
Knockout cricket can produce a very different betting environment from a long round-robin stage. Weather, toss decisions, scoreboard pressure and individual matchups may become more influential when there is no opportunity to recover from defeat.
How Teams Qualify for the 2027 Cricket World Cup
South Africa and Zimbabwe qualify automatically as host nations. Namibia is a co-host but does not receive automatic qualification.
The other eight direct places will go to the highest-ranked eligible teams in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings at the relevant qualification cut-off. Four additional countries will progress through the 2027 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, completing the 14-team field.
Associate nations can reach the final qualifier through Cricket World Cup League 2 and the Qualifier Play-off. The top four League 2 teams progress directly to the World Cup Qualifier, while lower-placed League 2 teams can remain alive through the play-off pathway.
For bettors, qualification matters because futures prices may move sharply when a country:
- Secures automatic qualification
- Falls into the global qualifier
- Misses qualification altogether
- Changes position in the ODI rankings
- Produces a strong run of ODI results
Backing a team before qualification is certain can sometimes provide a bigger price, but it also introduces the risk that the team will not reach the tournament.
2027 Cricket World Cup Venues and Conditions
The tournament will be played at 12 grounds.
South Africa
- Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg
- Centurion, Tshwane
- Newlands Cricket Ground, Cape Town
- Kingsmead Cricket Ground, Durban
- St George’s Park, Gqeberha
- Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein
- Boland Park, Paarl
- Buffalo Park, KuGompo City
Zimbabwe
- Harare Sports Club, Harare
- Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo
- Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium, Victoria Falls
Namibia
- Namibia Cricket Ground, Windhoek
These venues were formally announced by the ICC on 30 July 2026.
Conditions will not be identical across all three countries. Johannesburg and Centurion can offer pace, bounce and assistance for powerful stroke-makers, while coastal venues may introduce swing, humidity or changing weather. Zimbabwean pitches can sometimes reward disciplined batting and slower bowling, while Windhoek presents another distinct set of conditions.
Consequently, bettors should avoid applying one general theory to every match. A total that looks below average at the Wanderers might be competitive at a slower venue.
Before betting, examine:
- The ground’s recent ODI scoring record
- Whether chasing or batting first has been more successful
- The expected weather
- Boundary dimensions
- The likely pitch composition
- Each team’s pace and spin balance
- The confirmed playing XI
Venue-specific analysis will be especially important for totals, player runs, method-of-dismissal and top-bowler markets.
Understanding Cricket Betting Odds
World Cup odds may be shown in decimal, fractional or American format.
Decimal Odds
Decimal odds display the total potential return, including the original stake.
For example:
- Stake: £10
- Odds: 4.00
- Potential total return: £40
- Potential profit: £30
Fractional Odds
Fractional odds display potential profit relative to the stake.
At odds of 3/1, a successful £10 bet would return £30 profit plus the original £10 stake.
Implied Probability
Odds can be converted into an estimated implied probability:
Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds × 100
Decimal odds of 4.00 imply a 25% probability before accounting for the bookmaker’s margin.
This calculation helps bettors judge whether the available price represents value. A strong team is not automatically a strong bet. The key question is whether its actual chance of winning is greater than the probability suggested by the odds.
Popular 2027 Cricket World Cup Betting Markets
Tournament Winner
The outright winner market asks which country will lift the trophy.
Prices are generally highest well before the event and become more responsive as qualification, squads and form become clearer. Outright bets may remain open throughout the competition, although odds will shorten or lengthen after every result.
To Reach the Final
This market can be useful when a team looks capable of progressing deep into the event but may not be trusted to win the final.
Semi-Final Qualification
A top-four or semi-final qualification wager reduces the need to predict the eventual champion. The new Super 7 system makes this market particularly relevant.
Group Winner
Once the draw has been completed, bookmakers may offer odds on the winner of each six-team group.
Group composition matters. A strong country placed alongside several leading contenders may offer a bigger price than a similarly rated team in a more favourable group.
Top Tournament Run-Scorer
This market rewards the batter who scores the most runs across the competition.
Consider:
- Likely batting position
- Number of matches the team may play
- Recent ODI form
- Ability against pace and spin
- Injury history
- Whether the batter is likely to be rotated
An opener from a semi-final contender will usually have more scoring opportunities than a middle-order batter representing a team expected to exit early.
Top Tournament Wicket-Taker
Fast bowlers could enjoy periods of assistance in Southern Africa, but spinners may still become influential on used surfaces later in the competition.
Strike bowlers who operate during the powerplay and at the death often have more wicket-taking opportunities than economical bowlers used mainly through the middle overs.
Match Winner
The standard moneyline market asks which team will win a specific fixture.
Do not judge this solely by overall reputation. Venue, team selection, recent schedule, injuries and tactical matchups should all influence the decision.
Top Team Batter and Bowler
These markets require bettors to select the highest run-scorer or wicket-taker for one team in a match.
They can be valuable when the overall result looks unpredictable but one player has a clearly defined role.
Player Runs and Wickets
Bookmakers may set a line for a player’s performance, such as over or under 34.5 runs.
For batter lines, review batting position, expected match situation and matchup against the opposing attack. For bowlers, check whether the player is likely to complete a full allocation of overs.
Match Totals
Totals markets may cover:
- Team runs
- Match runs
- Sixes
- Fours
- Wickets
- Highest opening partnership
- Powerplay runs
These markets demand close attention to the pitch and weather. Historical averages alone may be misleading if the surface has recently changed.
Live Betting
In-play odds move throughout the match in response to wickets, run rate, required rate and projected totals.
Live betting can provide additional information because the pitch and tactical approach are already visible. However, it also encourages fast decisions. Establish your preferred price and maximum stake before entering a live market.
Early 2027 Cricket World Cup Favourites
The following assessment is provisional. Final squads, qualification results, injuries and the official draw could substantially change the outlook.
India
India are the early team to beat.
In the ICC’s May 2026 annual ODI rankings update, India remained first with 118 rating points. They were followed by New Zealand on 113 and Australia on 109.
India’s greatest strength is likely to be depth. They can potentially select high-quality opening batters, middle-order players, all-rounders, fast bowlers and spinners from a large talent pool.
The main concern is price. India frequently attract heavy public support, which can result in relatively short outright odds. Bettors should compare the available price with the genuine probability of winning a long tournament in unfamiliar conditions.
Early assessment: Leading contender, but value depends on the price.
South Africa
South Africa could be one of the most interesting outright selections. The Proteas climbed to fourth in the May 2026 ODI rankings, moving ahead of Pakistan. They will also have extensive familiarity with eight of the 12 venues. Home advantage does not guarantee success, particularly given the pressure South Africa may face in a major ICC event. Nevertheless, knowledge of local pitches, climate, travel demands and ground dimensions could become significant across a 57-match tournament. Their fast-bowling resources may be particularly effective at venues offering pace and bounce.Early assessment:
Strong value candidate and a realistic finalist.
Australia
Australia enter the cycle as defending champions after winning the 2023 World Cup in India. The ICC also placed them third in the May 2026 ODI rankings. Australia’s tournament record means they should rarely be underestimated. Their ability to manage pressure, adapt to conditions and produce decisive performances in knockout matches makes them an obvious contender. The biggest uncertainty is squad transition. Several players from the 2023-winning generation may not be central figures in 2027, so bettors must judge the emerging squad rather than relying on past reputation.Early assessment:
Proven tournament threat with strong knockout credentials.
New Zealand
New Zealand were second in the May 2026 ODI rankings, only five rating points behind India. They are often tactically disciplined, well prepared and capable of competing in varied conditions. Their best World Cup teams have combined new-ball bowling, athletic fielding and adaptable batting rather than relying solely on superstar names. Their outright price may also be more attractive than those of India or Australia.Early assessment:
Credible semi-final candidate and possible value play.
Pakistan
Pakistan possess the talent to defeat any opponent, but consistency will be central to their chances. They were fifth in the May 2026 ODI rankings, narrowly behind South Africa. Their pace bowling could suit Southern African pitches, while high-class batting can make them dangerous when confidence is high. However, a long multi-stage tournament may expose inconsistency in selection, fielding or middle-order performance.Early assessment:
High-upside contender, but difficult to trust at a short price.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka remained sixth in the ICC’s May 2026 ODI rankings. A balanced spin attack and technically capable batting lineup could make them competitive, particularly at slower venues. Their prospects may depend heavily on whether their seam bowlers can take early wickets at the quicker South African grounds.Early assessment:
Potential Super 7 team with each-way appeal at a generous price.
Afghanistan
Afghanistan occupied seventh place in the May 2026 ODI rankings, ahead of England. They should no longer be viewed as a novelty selection. Their spin bowling, all-round options and growing confidence in major events could make them dangerous. The principal betting question is whether their batting can consistently handle high-quality pace and bounce. Their chances may improve if they are drawn to play key matches on slower surfaces.Early assessment:
Leading dark-horse candidate.
England
England completed the top eight in the May 2026 ODI rankings. Their ceiling remains high, but bettors should look for evidence that the team has established a settled 50-over identity. Aggressive batting can be effective, yet an inflexible approach may become risky when conditions demand consolidation. Early assessment: Capable of challenging, although current form and squad balance must improve before they are considered a leading pick. Based on the information available on 1 August 2026, our provisional shortlist is: Best overall pick: India India’s ODI ranking, depth and range of potential match-winners make them the most complete early selection. Home conditions and an improving ODI profile give the Proteas a realistic opportunity to reach the final. Australia’s World Cup pedigree makes them dangerous even when they are not the outright favourite. Afghanistan could outperform expectations if their batting adapts to Southern African pace and bounce. A provisional final prediction would be India versus South Africa, with India narrowly favoured to win. This forecast should be reviewed after the qualification field, group draw, fixture list and final squads are confirmed. Small differences in odds can have a significant effect over multiple bets. Compare the same market across licensed operators before placing a wager. Popular teams can be overpriced because of the volume of public support they attract. Estimate the probability first, then compare it with the available odds. A player-runs bet placed before the toss carries additional risk. The player may be rested, moved down the batting order or omitted from the XI. Team rankings provide a useful overview, but specific matchups often offer better insight. Examples include: Prioritise recent matches played under similar conditions. A ground’s long-term average may include games from a different era, season or pitch preparation strategy. A losing bet does not make the next wager more likely to win. Decisions should be based on price and probability, not frustration. Record the odds taken and compare them with the market’s closing price. Consistently securing better odds than the closing market can be a more useful long-term performance indicator than the result of a small number of bets. One common mistake is backing a tournament winner based only on team loyalty. Emotional support does not provide an analytical advantage. Another is overreacting to a single match. ODI results can be influenced by the toss, weather, an exceptional individual innings or a short batting collapse. A bettor should decide whether the result reveals a genuine structural weakness or merely normal sporting variance. Other mistakes include ignoring travel and recovery schedules, placing player bets without confirming batting positions, using promotional offers without reading their conditions and risking too much of a bankroll on one outright selection. Cricket betting should be treated as entertainment, not a way to generate guaranteed income. In Great Britain, the minimum age for online gambling and betting is normally 18. Licensed gambling businesses must also verify customers’ identity and age before allowing them to gamble. Safer practices include setting firm spending and time limits, taking regular breaks and never betting with money needed for essential expenses. Self-exclusion and timeout tools are available for anyone who needs to step away. Only use operators licensed in your jurisdiction, and never attempt to recover losses by increasing stakes.
